I Understand English but I Can’t Speak — What Is Actually Blocking You
You understand English.
You watch videos.
You read texts.
You recognize words instantly.
But when you need to speak —
nothing comes out.
Or it comes out slowly, broken, uncertain.
This is one of the most common situations in language learning.
And most people misunderstand the problem completely.
This Is Not a Vocabulary Problem
If you understand English —
you already have enough words.
The problem is not “I don’t know enough”.
The problem is:
You don’t know how to use what you know in real time.
Understanding and Speaking Are Two Different Skills
Understanding is passive.
You receive information.
You recognize patterns.
You follow meaning.
Speaking is active.
You must:
- choose words
- build structure
- react instantly
- carry meaning forward
That is a completely different process.
Why This Happens
Most learners are trained like this:
- read → understand
- listen → understand
- translate → check
But almost never:
- react → speak
- think → speak
- respond → speak
So your brain becomes good at recognizing English,
but not at producing it.
The Hidden Barrier
Here is what actually blocks you:
You try to speak correctly instead of speaking naturally.
So your brain does this:
“Is this correct?”
“Is this the right tense?”
“Is this how natives say it?”
And while you are thinking —
the moment is gone.
What Does NOT Solve This
Let’s be clear.
These things alone will not fix your speaking:
- more grammar
- more vocabulary lists
- more passive listening
- more reading
They improve understanding.
They do not build speech.
What Actually Changes the Situation
You start speaking when:
- you allow imperfect speech
- you train fast responses
- you build ready-to-use phrases
- you focus on meaning, not perfection
You stop trying to build sentences.
You start using them.
Real Speech Is Not Perfect
Native speakers:
- hesitate
- simplify
- adjust mid-sentence
- react emotionally
Fluency is not perfection.
Fluency is movement.
The Shift That Changes Everything
Instead of:
“I need to say this correctly…”
You move to:
“I need to say this now.”
That is when speech starts.
How We Work With This
At Levitin Language School, we do not separate language into “grammar first, speaking later”.
We build speaking from the start.
Through:
- controlled dialogue
- real situations
- thinking patterns instead of translation
